Anand gets third spot at World Rapid Mainz

After World Champion Vishy Anand failed to qualify for the final of the GRENKELEASING Rapid World Championship Levon Aronian was clear favorite to win the title against the Ian Nepomniachtchi. And indeed, the Armenian had no trouble to become Rapid World Champion. In fact, the biggest surprise of the final might have been the smooth way in which Aronian won.

World Champion Anand, however, made his fans wonder. Apparently he did not manage to overcome the bad shape he had shown in the preliminaries and his play in the match for place three against Germany number one Arkadi Naiditsch was strangely uninspired and lacked punch. But maybe the explanation was much simpler. "Well, as there is not that much at stake in the match for third place, it is very difficult to motivate oneself", he later explained at the press conference.

Disastrous Start by Viswanathan Anand in Chess Classic World Rapid at Mainz

The World Champion Vishy Anand has never had a worse start at the Chess Classic. On the first day of the GrenkeLeasing Rapid World Championship he lost his first two games and now has to worry about qualifying for the final.

Defending his title for the 12th time, Anand started disastrously . Playing with White against Aronian he used an unusual amount of time in the opening – which, however, seemed to be well invested: But things became a   bit complicated  as the game progressed and his game went astray resulting in his first loss. This was Anand first ever defeat in the world Rapid Championsh he has played so far. His second game against Ian Napomniachtchi also went the same way.

In the second round ,Anand faced young Russian Nepomniachtchi who  opted for the sharp Poisoned Pawn variation of the Najdorf Sicilian . Anand, however, failed in his strategy and lost

However Anand scored his first win in the last game of this double round Qualifying all play all – which he bitterly needed to keep up his hopes to qualify for the final.   Anand spoke to Sports Hour after the match

Anand has to win the remaining three games  to qualify for the Final.
