Gelfand is New World Cup Champion

The fourth game of the match between Ponomariov and Gelfand was drawn as well, so the  match had to be decided in tie-breaks. First the opponents exchanged blows in rapid chess (2-2), then Gelfand prevailed inblitz (3-1), winning the 2009 World Cup. •  “I managed to win in the tie breaks, though it was very hard” - a happy winner shared his impressions with the journalists. “ I think I could have showed good result already in the second rapid game. But the stress and tension did the work and I started blundering. Ruslan was also making mistakes and we ended in a draw. I had a bit advantage in the fourth game. KRAMNIK WINS TAL MEMORIAL RAPID

It was an exciting final round in Moscow yesterday. Surprisingly, Vishy Anand quickly lost with White to Levon Aronian (who begins to look like the toughest opponent for Vishy in the world champion's whole career). Ruslan Ponomariov, also quickly, scored his first (and last) victory in the event by defeating Alexander Morozevich. Peter Svidler vs Boris Gelfand was a draw in a long theoretical line of the Petroff Defence. The first place was decided in the game between Vassily Ivanchuk and Vladimir Kramnik where the Ukrainian, being somewhat short of time (though nothing special by his standards), spoiled a huge advantage. So, Kramnik remained on top and won the tournament.
