Shares First Place with Negi The wiz kid of the Indian Chess 15 years old Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi made a hat trick of wins in a short span of two months, first winning jointly the coveted Kaupthing Open in Luxemburg followed by Philadelphia Open and now with Sharing the First Prize in WORLD Open in a star studded Field of Strong Grandmasters . He however missed the Sole Title when he lost the Blitz Game to Evzeny Najer. After thrashing Grandmaster Alexander Shabalov in the penultimate round Parimarjan replied with D5 to his opponent GM Lubomir Ftachnik’s opening move of Nf3 in the final round, and with D4-Nf6 the game continued on the lines of Queens Gambit Declined pattern. Both the players were extra cautious and knew that a draw would make them joint winners hence after 10th move Ftachnik offered a draw which Parimarjan gladly accepted. To decide the champion’s title Parimarjan had tp play a Blitz game in which he made a blunder and lost the Champions Title.

World Open Heating upHalfway thru there are as many as 8 Grandmasters are jointly leading the World open 2008 being played in Philadelphia The defending champion Grandsmaster Varuzhan Akobian is one of the 8 players including Philadelphia Open Winner India's Parimarjan Negi who are jointly leading the championship after 5 rounds. Four more rounds are yet to be played and as many as 50 players are in the field for the top honours. Grandmasters Surya Sekhar Ganguly and Abhijeet Kunte drew their respective games while GM G N Gopal lost to his opponent. The veteran Grandmaster Arthur Yussupov failed to break the defenses of Indian IM Arun Prasad and in the end game realising no way out offered a draw which the Indian gladly accepted. Leon 1st June 2008. Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk defeated world champion Viswanathan Anand in the final of the XXI Ciudad de León chess tournament by 2½ - 1½ . In the first game Ivanchuk got a nice position after the opening and took the initiative in the Queen's side. Some inaccuracies by Anand led to certain problems, where a wrong sacrifice, 38.Nxf6? was refuted by 40…Qxb2!

Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk defeated Spaniard Alexei Shirov 3-1 in the second semifinal of the XXI Ciudad de León chess tournament. In the first game Ivanchuk, playing with the White pieces, obtained only a small advantage after the opening, but a mistake by Shirov, 18…Bd8? led to a difficult position for Black. With 19.f4! Ivanchuk got a clear advantage, then a strong attack, and finally an easily winning endgame with Queen against 2 Rooks.

World No 2 in the women’s section India’s Grandmaster Koneru Humpy will represent Monaco
The French chess magazine Europe Echecs is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its foundation with a youth rapid tournament in Lyon, France, the town known as the gastronomy capital of the World. The guest of honour is the 12th World Champion Anatoly Karpov. The young stars are playing their games in the premises of the club 
from 5 countries joining the mix. A large contingent of 14 players from India are competing this year.
