Humpy Equalises takes Yifan to Tie break

Koneru Humpy , after loosing the first game to Yifan, fought like a tigress in   the 2nd game to defeat her opponent and take her to Tie Break

Humpy came out with a slight advantage from the opening phase but could not find a strong continuation although she had to win after the loss of yesterday. Her Chinese opponent pushed the pawn to d5 and gave a chance for exchanging the light pieces which could have been a nice way for a possible draw. Koneru avoided the full exchange and took the risky Bb5 move after which her position started to gradually loose momentum and deteriorated.

Hou Yifan made a blunder with Na5, thus the position provided the chance for White to mate in 8 moves and Hou resigned after a few more moves.

Carlsen beat Aronian,Takes Lead at Bilbao

Round 6 started with more than half-an-hour delay because of problems with the air-conditioning in the glass cube.

There was not much fight in Ivanchuk vs Anand: the two oldest participants made a very calm draw.

Topalov vs Radjabov saw a long fight. Topalov had a promising position in the middlegame, but in the end it was Radjabov who played for a win for a few dozen moves. Carlsen defeated Aronian, using a spectacular novelty - and took the lead, thanks to the Bilbao scoring system (Carlsen has three wins and one loss, which is better than Topalov's two wins with no losses).

Humpy amongst 8 left in WWCC

Koneru Humpy and Pia Cramling made a good start in the Women World Chess Championship quarterfinals by winning against Shen Yang and Antoaneta Stefanova respectively. The other two games were drawn.

Koneru's game started as a rather modest Slav Exchange variation, which scores many draws on the Grandmaster level, but with one difference - White held a pair of Bishops. The Indian masterfully engineered an attack on the king side, and exactly these two soldiers imposed huge damage in Shen Yang's camp . This swift victory puts Koneru in excellent position before the tomorrow's return match, but let's not forget that Shen was already trailing behind Nadezda Kosintseva and succeeded to win the tiebreaks.

Drawn Games in Round 5 at Bilbao

Anand is far from his best form and  yesterday’s loss to Topalov  in 25 moves put him in the last place. That is not something the World Champion can allow himself to continue, so he should give a real fight in the remaining games.

Carlsen has difficulties playing against the Indian and his score is quite negative. Nevertheless, he showed great progress and did not allow his opponent in the 5th Round to over shadow him. Anand's bad form was visible for   at least twice he simply miscalculated, but his experience helped him a second miraculous escape - the first against Ivanchuk. Carlsen could only be sorry for the several inaccuracies in opponent's time trouble that let his advantage slip away. The game ended in a draw
