Topalov wins Perl Spring Super GM Title

Grandmaster Veselin Topalov scored yet another victory in the final round of the PEARL SPRING  SUPER GM Championship which concluded in China. He finished on 7 points  from 10 games, 1.5 points ahead of the runner up GM Levon Aronian who finished on 5.5 points. The Local Hero GM BU Xianghi came third with 5 points.

The Great Chess Doping Scandal : SPIEGEL

Grandmaster Vassily Ivanchuk refused to submit a urine sample for a drug test at the Chess Olympiad in Dresden and is now considered guilty of doping. The world of chess is outraged that he could face a two-year ban.

The German news paper  and biggest Online news Service, Spiegel, reports on any subject, the other European media are quick to follow suit. This week the Spiegel has published a full-page article on the failed attempt to get Vassily Ivanchuk to submit himself to a doping test after his final game at the Dresden Olympiad.

VISHY PRESENTED WITH DIAMOND RING

The All India Chess Federation(AICF) on Thursday felicitated Viswanathan Anand for retaining the World Chess Championship title. Team India Cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni presented a one-carat diamond ring to Anand on behalf of the federation. Anand, who is celebrating his 39th birthday, thanked the federation. “I think I will accept the ring in the spirit of brotherhood. I remember the reception the federation gave me last year and again a very special reception this time. It really means a lot to me.”

Kevin Spragget wins Gigueira da Foz Title

Argentinean Grandmaster Anton Kovalyov  drew his Final Round Game of the Figueira da Foz , which concluded today.

Grandmaster Dragan Panuovic thrashed  WIM Leite Catarina in just 21 moves and took his score to 7.5 points. He won 7 games ,lost one against GM. Anton Kovalyov  and drew  against  GM Kevin Spraggett .

The Canadian Grandmaster Kevin Spraggett  played a good game and defeated GM Oleg Romanishin  in a tense game.  Kevin Spraggett also remained unbeaten with 6 wins and 3 draws to  collect 7.5 points  which ultimately favoured to take the championship Title

ANTON KOVALYOV needs a win for Title

Argentinean Grandmaster  Anton Kovalyov  won yet another game to take his score to 7 from 8 outings  in the penultimate round of the ongoing International Chess Championship ,Figueiro da Foz.  He  just need a win away from snatching the Figueiro da Foz Title.

India’s International Master Lanka Ravi drew his game and will now meet The Chamionship leader Anton Kovalyov in the Final Round game

Anton Kovalyov takes sole Lead at Figueira da Foz

The Argentinian Grandmaster Anton Kovalyov  defeated Grandmaster Oleg Romanishin in a complex duel while on the other top table  Grandmaster Dragan Paunovic drew with  Canadian Grandmaster Kevin Spraggetti. The sole win on the top two borads take Anton Kovalyov to 6 points making him the sole leader after 7th round of the Figueira da Foz International Chess Championship being played here in Portugal.

Lanka Ravi lost in the 6th Round

Indian International Master Lanka Ravi tasted first defeat at the hands of Serbian Grandmaster Dragan Panuovic when he blundered in the middle game and lost the game . Playing with black he replied with Nf6 to his opponent's Nf3 and after normal moves the game followed Grunfeld varriations. The Serbian GM who lost the 5th game came well prepared and right from the world go he started capturing important squares and built an unpregnable fort which Lanka Ravi failed to destroy.

The Argentinian Grandmaster Anton Kovalyov  beat Serbian Grandmaster Dragan Panuovic is just 46 moves  to become Joint leader with Kevin Spraggett who defeated Vladimir Petkov on the top borad.

The championship saw  the shortest game that resulted in a fine victory in favour of Grand master Oleg Ronishin when he defeated WGM Vera Nebolsina in just 15 moves

Indian IM Lanka Ravi also won and took his score to 4 points

GM Paunovic in Sole lead at da Foz

With the sun shining in this Resort City of Figueiro da Foz , Portugal, the battle for the Title also got heated up. As many as  20 boards  saw victories. However the Joint leaders after Round 3 Grandmaster Vladimir Petkov and Grandmaster Anton Kovalyov drew their game after 28 moves when no one wanted to take any risk.

Woman Grandmaster Vera Nebolsina, who unfortunately lost in the 3^rd round played very cautiously and this time did not give any opportunity to her opponentand finally came out  with a win after 62 moves

International Master Lanka Ravi from India had a good chance in the middle game but preferred to play a safe game against a strong GM Romanishin and finally agreed to accept  a draw.

The Festival Internacional da Xazred ,Torneo Intenationale da Foz 2008 is being held in, one of best tourism centers of Portugal,Figueira da  Foz, which is 150km away from the capital city Lisbon from 29th November to 7th December 2008.  This is one of the best open chess tournaments with participation of more than 10 Grand Masters an International Masters around the world including GM Anton Kovalyov, Kevin Spraggert, Dragan Punovic Vladimir Petkov  Oleg M Romanishin.

WGM Vera Nebolsina  from Russia and IM Lanka Ravi have been invited to participate.

The 78th FIDE Congress held during the 38th Chess Olympiad taking place from 12 to 25 November 2008 in Dresden ended as another organizational triumph for the Turkish Chess Federation, representing one of the most rapidly developing chess countries in the world.

The  FIDE Congress, Selected Istanbul as the venue for  2012 Chess with 95 votes against 40 votes (1 vote not counted) of the other bid coming from Montenegro (Budva).

Indian Men and Women score victories at Chess Oly

In the  penultimate round of the 38th Chess Olympiad being held at Dresden Germany both Indian men and women teams scored impressive victories over Czech Republic and Slovenia respectively . GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly and GN Gopal take  India to 3-1 against Czech Republic.

Indian men put up a dismal show at Chess Olympiad

Indian Men go down to the USA  0.5-3.5 in round 9, while Indian women chess team could only salvage a draw against 5th seed France in the 9th round of 38th Chess Olympiad being held at Dresden Germany. For India D.Harika scored a creditable victory over much higher rated opponenent of the French team GM Sebag Marie. Harika Dronnavali spoke to Vijay Kumar after her win .

Indian Women's 2nd Loss at Chess Olympiad

Indian Men  were held to draw by Slovenia in the 8th Round of the Chess Olympiad being played at Dresden in Germany.

In the women's section Harika Dronavalli, who  made her first win against Alisa Maric of Serbia was jubilient . She Spoke to Vijay Kumar  after her First Victory in the Chess Olympiad .

MASSIVE TURNOUT TO GREET ANAND

The world champion Viswanathan Anand was given a special hero's welcome on November 20 when he arrived at hometown Chennai from Frankfurt. Anand had defeated Vladimir Kramnik 6.5-4.5 on October 29. After armed policemen could not manage to control the crowd of onlookers, media, chess players pushing towards the champion, they escorted him to his car from the arrival gate directly sidestepping the area where he was supposed to be felicitated. So, there was no felicitation as such. Half the people who had come to greet him even did not manage a glimpse of the champion.
