Carlsen is NEW CORUS CHAMPION
Magnus Carlsen won the 10,000-euro first prize in the 72nd Corus Chess Tournament which concluded on Sunday. India’s Viswanathan Anand finished with 7.5 points for the 4th place
In
the final round of the championship World Champion Viswanathan Anand
agreed to a draw after 39 moves with black from a Meraner against the Dutch
Grandmaster Loek van Wely to remain the
only unbeaten competitor in the tournament’s highest division.
The
19-year-old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen
played attacking chess throughout to collect 8.5 points for a tournament
score of five wins, seven draws and one loss… He won the Championship and a prize of 10,000 Euros
Grandmaster
Vladimir Kramnik, whom Anand beat in the 12th Round game , was
satisfied with a half point after just 21 moves with white from a Queen’s
Indian that never really got underway.
Alexie
Shirov drew with Lenier Dominguez to finish jon 8 points for a joint 2nd
place
In
B group Both Indian Grandmasters Pentala Harikrishna and Parimarjan Negi
finished joint Sixth with identical score of 6.5 points from 13
games
In
Group C GM Abhijeet Gupta gave a creditable performance by winning the last
game and finishing on 8.5 points just
one and a half a point behind the
champion LI CHAO.
However World Junior Champion Somaya Swaminathan gave a dismal performance to finish last in the group.
