Holland’s Sergei Tiviakov held Viswanathan Anand to a tie with white in
63 moves from an Alapin. It was the world champion’s ninth draw in as
many rounds.
Vladimir Kramnik of Russia defeated Norway’s Magnus Carlsen in
ninth-round play at the Corus Chess Tournament to join Alexei Shirov of
Spain on top of the standings in the event’s highest section Tuesday.
Kramnik’s win came after 38 moves with black from a Catalan, one of his
favourite openings
Sharing the third spot with Carlsen was Russia’s Sergei Karjakin, who
defeated Hikaru Nakamura of the U.S. with black in a Nimzo-Indian. The
Russian outplayed his opponent in a tactically well-handled middle
game, winning a piece on his 39th. Nakamura might have resigned on the
spot but struggled on for another nine moves before surrendering.
In Group C, where the best game of the day earns the winner 100 euro’s,
the prize went to Robin van Kampen for his victory with white over
Abhijeet Gupta of India in 30 moves from a Ruy Lopez. China’s Li Chao
replaced Ray Robson of the U.S. as the sole leader in this group
downing the American in 34 moves with white from a Sicilian Dragon.
Robson overlooked a checkmate-in-one.
