Barbosa clinches Parsvnath International Open title

ixth seed Filipino Grandmaster Oliver Barbosa ensured a thrilling end to the 10th Parsvnath International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament by defeating Indian International Master Shyam Nikil in the eleventh and final round at Ludlow Castle Sports Complex here on Monday.  This victory enabled Barbosa to take his tally to nine and half points to take the Winner’s trophy and pocketed a cash prize of 2 lakh rupees.


Grandmaster Gomez John Paul of Philippines and Indian International Master Lalith Babu tied for the second spot with nine points but better tie-break score helped Filipino Grandmaster to finish second while Lalith satisfied with third spot finish. In the final round, Lalith outwitted International Master K Rathnakaran while Gomez drew with Ma Qun of China. Ma Qun secured International Master norm during the process

With one round remaining, the tenth edition of Parsvnath International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament heading for a close finish as at the end of penultimate round matches at Ludlow Castle Sports Complex on Sunday, Filipino Grandmasters Oliver Barbosa and John Paul Gomez leading the point table with eight and half points after registering emphatic victories over Grandmasters Mark Paragua and Deepan Chakkravarthy in the tenth round. Indian International Masters Lalith Babu M R, K Rathnakaran and Shyam Nikil along with untitled Chinese player Ma Qun are closely following the leaders with a drift of half point in this Rs. 15 lakh prize money tournament.

In the tenth round encounters, playing with white pieces in Grunfeld defence, Barbosa not given any chances to his countrymen rival to seal the match in 33 moves while displaying a solid tactical game in Kings Indian defence opening, Gomez overcame his Indian rival in 42 moves. Rathnakaran outwitted Kazakh International Master Kiril Kuderinov while Ma Qun shocked fifth seed Russian Grandmaster Andrei Deviatkin to occupy the joint second spot with Lalith Babu and Shyam Nikil, who overcame their Indian International Master rivals Vishnu Prasanna and S Nitin respectively in the tenth round.

Paragua joins Barbosa and Gomez at the top of Parsvnath International Chess after 9th Round

Filipino Grandmaster Mark Paragua defeated Indian International Master Debashis Das in the ninth round to join countrymen Oliver Barbosa and Gomez John Paul to share the lead with seven and half points in the ongoing 10th Parsvnath International Grandmasters Chess Tournament at Ludlow Castle Sports Complex on Saturday.


Playing with white pieces in Semi-Slav variation, Paragua showed sheer attacking game with three continues piece sacrifices in the middle of game to garner full point against his Indian rival in 36 moves.

Kolkata based Diptayan Ghosh achieved his first International Master norm after signing the peace with World Under-12 Gold medalist Karthikeyan Murali in the ninth round while Zeng Chongsheng of China lost his ninth round encounter against Indian International Master Lalith Babu but secured his International Master norm during the process.

Barbosa and Gomez maintains lead; Das stuns Aleksandrov at Parsvnath Open

Filipino Grandmasters Oliver Barbosa and Gomez John Paul signed the peace treaty in their top board battle to maintain their joint lead with six and half points in the ongoing 10th Parsvnath International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament here at Ludlow Castle Sports Complex on Thursday.


Meanwhile there is no stopping for the upset galore in this edition as World Under-18 bronze medalist, Deabashis Das shocked second seed Grandmaster Aleksandrov of Belarus. Playing with black pieces in Semi-Slav variation, Das took his opponent’s queen for rook and bishop in 32 move and used his queen and knight combination to good effect in the middle game.  Facing the defeat, Belarusian Grandmaster shook the hands of his Indian opponent signaling a win for the Orissa youngster.

Filipino Grandmasters Oliver Barbosa and Gomez John Paul defeated Grandmaster Marat Dzhumaev of Uzbekistan and Indian International Master Lalith Babu M R respectively in the sixth round to emerge as the joint leaders in the 10th Parsvnath International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament at Ludlow Castle Sports Complex here on Wednesday.


Playing with black pieces in Caro-Kan defence game, Barbosa gained an exchange of rook for his minor piece in the thirty first move and facing the inevitable, Dzhumaev give up the match after six more moves.  While playing white side of Maroczy Bind variation of Sicilian defence, Lalith Babu failed to convert a favourable middle game position and lost the initiative towards the end to hand over full point to his Filipino rival.

Gusian stuns Trang; Chanda held at Parsvnath Int Open Chess

Chandigarh youngster Himal Gusian stunned Hungarian Grandmaster Hoang Thanah Trang in the third round of the 10th Parsvnath International Open Grandmaster Chess Tournament at the Ludlow Castle Sports Complex here on Monday.  The foreign Grandmasters are now feeling the heat in the Delhi’s winter as many as three of them have tasted defeat in the last two rounds. Earlier in the second round, Maharashtra youngster Pratik Patil and Chinese lad Bai Jinshi opened the casualty list of the tournament by upsetting eighth seed Ukranian Grandmaster Mikhailo Oleksienko and Russian Grandmaster Evegeny Gleizerov respectively.


Playing white side of McCutcheon variation in Classical line of French defence, Himal gained upper hand in the middle game and uprooted the defence of his fancied rival in 86 moves.  In another important match of the day, International Master Ramnath Bhuvanesh held top seed Grandmaster Sandipan Chanda to a creditable draw. Playing black side of Scheveningen variation of Sicilian Defence, Chanda pressed hard for a decisive result with his double bishop combination against bishop and knight but Bhuvanesh stood firm to deny him full point and singed the peace treaty after 67 moves.

Parsvnath International Chess begins; Dhopade and Karthikeyan held

The 10th edition of prestigious Parsvnath International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament got off to a rousing start at the Ludlow Castle Sports Complex, Civil Lines  on Sunday.   


As expected almost all the top seeded players of the tournament, which include 19 Grandmasters, posted easy victories to advance to the second round with full points in their kitty. Top seed Indian Grandmaster Sandipan Chanda defeat Rajesh Kumar Nath while second seed Aleksandrov Aleksej of Belaurs had an easy outing against local lad Pavit Singh and third seed Ukrainian Grandmaster Kravtsiv Martyn made short work of Shyam Shetye. Among the Indian players, former national champions Grandmasters Abhijit Kunte and Praveen Thipsay started their tournament campaign on winning note as they defeated R Salini and Ravindra Dange respectively in the first round.

 

The surprises of the round came in the form of draws as International Masters Swapnil Dhopade and P Karthikeyan were denied victories by their lower rated opponents SBV Nair and local youngster Sarthak Mahajan respectively in the opening round.

Yu Ruiyuan emerges Chennai Int Chess Champion, GM Norm for Akshayraj Kore

Yu Ruiyuan of China 
emerged the Chennai Open 2012 Champion with 9.0 points after the eleventh and final round of the SDAT – RMK 4th Chennai Open 2012 International Grandmaster Chess Tournament, at Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Periamet, Chennai here today. Sharing the second spot with 8.5 points were top seed Aleksandrov Aleksej (Belarus), 
defending champion Kravtsiv Martyn (Ukraine), Akshayraj Kore (India), Marat Dzhumaev (Uzbekistan) and Gomez John Paul (Philippines) respectively.

In the crucial final round, Yu held Uzbek Grandmaster Marat Dzhumaev without difficulty in a Sicilian game lasting 33 moves. The tournament is big triumph for the untitled Chinese star Yu Ruiyuan who started as the 13th seed with an ELO rating of 2491 and finished on top of the table. The title win fetches Yu an International Master Norm, as well as a Grandmaster Norm

Yu Ruiyuan of China led the table with 8.5 points after the tenth and penultimate round of the SDAT – RMK 4th Chennai Open 2012 International Grandmaster Chess Tournament, at Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Periamet, Chennai here today. Sharing the second spot with 8.0 points were top seed Aleksandrov Aleksej (Belarus), defending champion Kravtsiv Martyn (Ukraine), Akshayraj Kore (India) and Marat Dzhumaev (Uzbekistan) respectively.

The top board game between Indian International Master Akshayraj Kore and 
Grandmaster Aleksandrov Aleksej (Belarus) turned out to be an interesting fare. The Queens Gambit game saw both the players exchanging major pieces within the first twenty moves. Well into a triple minor piece ending, Akshayraj thwarted all of Aleksandrov tricks and draw was agreed after 36 moves.

Talented Delhi lad Vaibhav Suri 
beat local challenger Vishnu Prasanna and moved into joint lead after the sixth round of the SDAT – RMK 4th Chennai Open 2012 International Grandmaster Chess Tournament,at Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Periamet, Chennai here today. Vaibhav Suri leads the table with 5.5 points, along with GMs Aleksandrov Aleksej (Belarus) and Oleksienko Mikhailo (Ukraine) and untitled Chinese strongman Yu Ruiyuan respectively. Behind the leaders were GMs Kravtsiv Martyn (Ukraine), S P Sethuraman (India), Gomez John Paul (Philippines), Ziaur Rahman (Bangladesh) and Hoang Thanh Trang (Hungary) at 5.0 points in a group of eleven players.

Seeded players were less harassed, even as Orissa lad Debashis Das emerged as the lone GM conqueror.
 The Queens Gambit game saw Richard in an aggressive mood, as he pushed his kingside pawns for an all out attack. An unsuccessful middle game combination by Richard saw him going down by a piece, as Debashis defended accurately. Unable to press further Richard resigned on the 25th move. Read More

Indian trio S L Narayanan, Akshayraj Kore and Vishnu Prasanna stunned Grandmasters Mark Paragua (Philippines), Dzhumaev Marat (Uzbekistan) and Gomez John Paul (Philippines) respectively in the fourth round of the SDAT – RMK 4th Chennai Open 2012 International Grandmaster Chess Tournament, at Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Periamet, Chennai here today. 

GMs Oleksienko Mikhailo (Ukraine) and Neelotpal Das (India) along with IMs Vishnu Prasanna and Akshayraj Kore (both India)

H K Pradeep and Pramod Josuha lifts top Prizes at Gulf Dirt Track

High octane competition was witnessed in the fourth round of the Gulf Dirt Track National Championship for two‐wheelers, in Bhopal on Saturday. TVS Racing riders, led by superb performances from Arvind K P, H K Pradeep, Pramod Joshua and R Natraj, stole the show as expected, either winning events in the glamour classes or snatching second or third places.
The event, Sponsored by Gulf Oil Corporation of India, staged under the aegis of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), and organised by Mumbai’s Sportscraft, had thrills galore as the country’s leading riders battled to crown themselves National champions in various categories.
After the resounding success of the first two rounds in Jodhpur and Nashik, the third and fourth rounds staged in Bhopal on Friday and Saturday also saw top class riding from not only the abovementioned riders but the local talent too.

Aravind, Joshua and Pradeep, all seasoned riders and past champions in previous Gulf Dirt Track races, were engaged in a rousing battle in the two races for Foreign Motorcycles Group A 250cc 2 and 4‐stroke. In the end,
after neck‐and‐next racing over the many hairpin bends on the specially‐laid out course, it was Aravind’s carefree riding that got the better of his TVS teammates in the first race of the category, with Joshua placing second place and Pradeep third.
Nashik’s Shamin Khan all so did well and ran the aforementioned Bangalore riders close but had to settle for fourth place. However, Pradeep had his revenge in the second race of the category, relegating Arvind to second place and Joshua to third.  
That enabled Pradeep clinch the overall honours, as he finished with 143 points from the four rounds, ahead of Joshua (118), Arvind (116) and Natraj 97. It must be mentioned here that Aravind had missed the first round.,   But Aravind was unstoppable in the Indian Expert Class Group B Motorcycle upto 260 cc 2 & 4 stroke, winning both the races, with Joshua finishing second in both and Naresh VS and Pradeep taking third place in one race each. Joshua though took overall honours in this class, finishing with 136 point

China gets Gold at World Women Team Championship, Indian Womens Fourth


The ultimate round of the WWTC was full of fighting. 
Only Russia secured medals by making quick match draw with Armenia

The most dramatic encounter was China – India. Three games ended in draws and Zhao Xue overplayed Tania Sachdev in a complicated game on the third board.Because of this result, India lost the medal. Russia became silver medalist and Georgia,  took an upper hand on Turkey 3-1, became bronze winner.
 

Another candidate for bronze was Ukraine but this team could not win against Vietnam and thus, shared the 4th rank with India. 
Greece crushed RSA 4-0 to finish 8th

4-5. India, Ukraine – 11;
